Cancers Related To HIV & AIDS

Cancers related to HIV & AIDS

Once diagnosed with HIV your life changes forever. It is not nearly as dire as it was 30 or so years ago. One of the many health issues you may ultimately face is being diagnosed with one or more cancers that are primarily seen in those with HIV and or AIDS. These cancers related to HIV & AIDS are more common than one would think and are rarely seen in those who are not HIV positive. Even in 2020 when living long term with HIV and AIDS is common you can still get ill and end up with any of these AIDS related cancers and other opportunistic infections such as AIDS related pneumonia. What can make matters worse is that there is a trend in healthcare for providers to overlook the progression of HIV into AIDS based on available medications and treatment regimens. If this oversight enables AIDS, and cancers related to it, to progress into the next phase. This closes many treatment options which make your prognosis even more bleak. What Cancers Are Seen In HIV & AIDS Patients?

Those who are HIV positive or now have AIDS have an increased risk of developing certain cancers. These are:

  • Kaposi sarcoma
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL)
  • Cervical cancer

For people with HIV, these 3 cancers are often called “AIDS-defining conditions.” This means that if a person with an HIV infection has 1 of these cancers, it can mean that AIDS has developed.
